Why the Payout Sets the Bar

Being right half the time loses money. The payout decides how often you actually need to be right.

Say you take a 3-pick where all three have to hit and it pays 6x. Put in $10, get back $60 if all three land.

How often do all three land? Multiply:

  • Three coin flips (50% each) → all three hit about 1 time in 8.
  • But it only pays 6x. Winning 1 in 8 while getting paid 6 loses money.

So 50% is not the bar. Work backwards from the payout instead: you need all three to land 1 time in 6, because that is what 6x pays. The number that does that is 55.03% per leg. (0.5503 × 0.5503 × 0.5503 ≈ 1/6.)

The bar for every slip size

These are the real numbers, worked out from each app’s actual payout table:

Read that table again. The 6-pick needs 54.21%. The 3-pick needs 55.03%. The bigger slip needs a lower hit rate, not a higher one — because a flex still pays you something when you miss one. “A 6-pick needs 55%” is wrong, and it is the single most repeated mistake in DFS.

Why one bad leg is so expensive

Put two legs at the break-even 55.03% into a 3-pick and add one coin flip. The slip is now −9% EV. One lazy leg turned a break-even slip into a losing one. This is why the board hides legs under the bar unless you ask to see them.

On a 3-pick that pays 6x and needs all three legs, each leg must hit about 55.03% of the time. Three legs at 55.03% land all three about 1 time in 6, and the payout is exactly 6x, so that is the break-even point.

Does a 6-pick need a higher win rate than a 3-pick?

No — this is the most common mistake. A PrizePicks 6-pick flex breaks even at about 54.21% per leg, which is LOWER than the 55.03% a 3-pick needs, because a flex still pays something when you miss one or two legs.

Why is 50% not good enough?

Because the payout is not 2x. On a 3-pick paying 6x, three coin-flip legs win about 1 time in 8 but only pay 6x, so you lose money over time even though each individual pick is a fair coin.
